A former Brick township employee has been charged with driving while intoxicated related to an accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old skateboarder. The alleged drunk driving accident occurred just after 10 p.m. on May 10. A 53-year-old Brick township public relations official reportedly was driving southbound on Jordan Road when he attempted to pass another car. The man entered the northbound lane where a 19-year-old Brick Township man was riding a skateboard near the shoulder.
The 53-year-old public relations official’s car is believed to have struck the skateboarder. Early reports indicated the teen may have been riding his skateboard in the traffic lane, near the northbound shoulder. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident. Autopsy reports indicate the teen died from multiple injuries sustained in the accident.
Like any New Jersey pedestrian accident, a skateboarding accident involving a motor vehicle leaves the skateboarder extremely vulnerable. The mass, size and weight of a moving motor vehicle can leave a skateboarder with serious injuries that, like in this case, may prove to be fatal.
The driver reportedly voluntarily resigned his position with the township Tuesday. Officials with the township told the Asbury Park Press the public relations official was not asked to turn in his resignation. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, making an unsafe lane change and driving an unregistered vehicle, according to the Asbury Park Press.
